The Oral-B iO 4 only has 4 different brushing modes, unlike the iO5 and iO6. In addition to the standard brushing mode, this model has a sensitive brushing mode, extra sensitive brushing mode, and a brushing mode for white teeth. This model doesn’t have the massage brushing mode.
Yes, all Oral-B electric toothbrushes are waterproof, so it is fine to use them in the shower. However, we don’t recommend immersing your brush in water. We know using your toothbrush in the shower saves a vital few minutes on hectic mornings.
The iO9 is a top of the range brush and one I do recommend. It isn’t for everyone and even if you can afford the premium price, I will reiterate, you don’t need the extra features. More affordable brushes (see the iO4) clean the teeth just as well. But, if you love your tech and want the best, this is it.
While both models offer 5 cleaning modes, their options differ. The iO5 includes Daily Clean, Sensitive, Super Sensitive, Intense, and Whitening modes, whereas the iO6 features Daily Clean, Sensitive, Intense, Whitening, and Gum Care modes. The iO5 provides a Super Sensitive mode, while the iO6 replaces this with Gum Care.

This brushes teeth well but the battery life is absolutely terrible – I’d be lucky to get a week out of it. The plug is for a bathroom shaver socket (which I don’t have) so I need an adapter (why not make it USB-C?). Fortunately the battery is replaceable so I’m going to try with another good battery and see if that helps. I got it in Prime Day sales and still think it was too expensive.
