Why won’t my Waterpik turn on or function properly? Potential causes

Is your Waterpik not expelling water when turned on? Does it not turn on at all? Despite using the maximum power, is the pressure low? Discover the potential causes here.

  • Battery is discharged: Cordless models may be equipped with a mAh battery or use rechargeable batteries, allowing for easy replacement. However, what about tabletop Waterpik irrigators? In this case, they also use a mAh battery. Over time, this battery can deteriorate, so simply replacing it may solve the issue.
  • Mineral accumulation: When using the irrigator, is filling the tank with tap water the correct practice? Tap water contains traces of minerals that gradually accumulate in the filters and the irrigator’s tube. If you’ve never cleaned it, over time, a plug can form that may obstruct the water flow, preventing proper output.
  • Problem with the power cable: Is your Waterpik not turning on? It could be due to a faulty connection or a damaged cable.
  • Water losses: The tanks are equipped with small rubber seals that prevent leakage. Over time and with use, these gaskets wear out and need to be replaced.
  • Air accumulation in the system: Sometimes the irrigator may continue to run temporarily even after running out of water, until you stop it. During this brief period, the filters and tubing can fill with trapped air. Without an escape path, this air remains trapped until the next use, which could damage the irrigator’s pathways.

How to repair your Waterpik depending on the type of problem you are experiencing

Considering purchasing a new irrigator due to malfunction? Explore our advice to determine if your issue has a viable solution.

The irrigator emits excessive noise

If your dental irrigator is making too much noise, first check for obstructions in the nozzle or water tank. Ensure all parts are properly assembled and there are no water leaks. If the noise persists, try cleaning the device following the manufacturer’s instructions and lubricate moving parts if necessary. If the issue continues, consider contacting the manufacturer for technical assistance or taking the device to an authorized repair center. In some cases, excessive noise may indicate an underlying mechanical problem that requires professional attention.

Lack of water flow

Typically, water scarcity is due to blockages in the filters and the tube. To clean it, mix water with white vinegar. Fill the tank with four tablespoons of vinegar and water, then turn on the irrigator and shoot the jet to clean the filters. Repeat the process until the tank is emptied, waiting 20 minutes between each refill. Water should flow normally after this.

Prevent leakage

First, identify the source of the leak: tank, tube, or handle. If it’s the tank, replace the seals to prevent leaks. For tubes or handles, check the connection and consider replacement if necessary. Prolonged use can loosen connections and cause leaks.

The cordless irrigator does not emit the water jet

Cordless irrigators can also get clogged, just like tabletop models. Follow the steps mentioned earlier, using a mixture of vinegar and water (two tablespoons of vinegar). Additionally, soak the nozzle in the same mixture to clean the hole.
